2012 Minority Alternative and Renewable Energy Consortium Forum

April 3, 2012

Last year the United States Departments of Agriculture and Energy sponsored the Minority Alternative and Renewable Energy Consortium at the State of Environmental Justice in America 2011 Conference.  A multi-disciplined group of professionals, academics and community interests participated in panel discussions that included the following themes: Research Interests & Collaborations, Faculty Development Opportunities, Student Interests & Opportunities, Green Jobs & Contract Opportunities, and Policy & Planning. The Forum will be repeated at the 6th Annual State of Environmental Justice in America Conference on April 3, 2012.

The purpose of the Forum is to support the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) Consortium on Alternative and Renewable Energy. The goal of the Consortium is to increase HBCU and MSI participation in Federal alternative and renewable energy procurement activities, as well as other Federal procurement opportunities.

Consortium Goals and Objectives:

  • Establish or strengthen relationship between HBCUs/MSIs and DOE, and other Federal agencies
  • Develop and/or strengthen relationships between HBCUs/MSIs and Majority Serving Institutions currently conducting Federal research and other work
  • Produce regular and consistent dialogue between MSIs and Federal policy and decision-makers
  • Develop and maintain a database of MSI research capacity, interest and projects
  • Develop and manage a graduate fellowship program that supports minority students pursuing a degree and career in energy policy
  • Integrate DOE and other Federal agencies core competencies into the undergraduate curriculum of MSIs
  • Conduct an educational initiative to attract K-12 minorities into STEM disciplines
  • Create partnerships between MSIs and small, minority and disadvantaged business entities to secure Federal and private research funds, and conduct alternative energy research and development projects
